Finding homeowners insurance is easy, anyone can call around, get online and gather up some prices on insurance. Pennsylvania homeowners insurance has become almost as much a commodity as Pennsylvania auto insurance. If you follow a few simple guidelines you will go a long ways toward giving yourself the best opportunity for the best deal as well.

Be aware that some companies offer actual cash value policies... or what is referred to as "functional replacement cost policies." Decide first if you want a policy that will allow the insurance company to dictate what materials are used in repairing your home after a loss. Materials, labor, etc will be determined by the current age of the property that was damaged or destroyed. The term "functional" isn't too hard to understand, to you it may mean that 40 year old hardwood floor will now be covered with carpet. Or the plaster walls will now be sheetrock, etc, etc. If those terms are OK with you then an ACV policy will work just fine.

For those who don't want to be told what materials, labor, etc they will use the replacement cost policy is the best choice. As long as you move ahead with repairs and/or replacing items the cost will be reimbursed to you in full. Naturally there are always minor exceptions, but this policy has the broadest options and coverage that you will want. To qualify for this type of policy in Pennsylvania you must normally have a home that has been kept "up to date" with electric, roof, heating system, etc. In other words, if you've done nothing to your 50 year old house to update it, don't be surprised if you can't qualify for a replacement cost policy. Assuming you qualify, the home will normally need to be insured for at least 80%-100% of its calculated rebuild cost. What you paid.. or "market value" has very little to do with the rebuild cost. You may be shocked at how much it will cost to rebuild your current home. Keep in mind that nothing is "on sale" after a fire or loss. Things need to be repaired or replaced "now" and the benefit of shopping for a low price are usually lost.

Pennsylvania homeowners insurance rates can vary widely. A few years ago it was much simpler, that was before the advent of insurance scoring and profiling risks in many different ways. It will pay you to check with several companies or an agent who represents several companies to be sure you're getting the best for your hard earned dollars. Look over the state filed rates in your county if you get a chance on the Pennsylvania insurance department's website. You'll find that in many counties across the state that the best Pennsylvania homeowners insurance rates are through regional companies like Erie Insurance and Donegal Group. Best of luck in your search.

Every week I get a variation of this question: will they cancel my car insurance? Well, it's not that simple here in Pennsylvania when it comes to cancelling car insurance. The state of Pennsylvania Insurance department has instituted guidelines regarding the procedures that must be taken to cancel a car insurance policy.

The DUI or violation that results in a license suspension is an easy one. If your license is lost, suspended or revoked during your policy period the insurance company can cancel the policy. If they don't catch it in a three year period they cannot come back after that and cancel. Getting a suspension or revocation of driving rights in another state is not a legitimate reason for cancellation. There are currently no other states who are reciprocating with Pennsylvania regarding violations and suspensions at this time.

Pennsylvania law is clear on what they will allow when it comes to accidents as well. Any two at-fault accidents over the threshold of $1150 within a 36 month give an insurance company the green light to cancel or non-renew an insurance policy. Certainly, some companies will give some credence to the agents input before they decide to cancel. Many times the severity of the accidents will be taken into account. Accidents in combination with violations are sure to be taken much more seriously than say 'sliding on snow covered roads'

Pennsylvania auto insurance regulations regarding violations is another option for insurance companies to use when deciding to cancel or non-renew a policy. A total of 12 points will result in an immediate suspension of priviledges and also cause for cancellation or non-renewal of your insurance. Other combination of accidents and violations can be used for cancellation according to Pennsylvania auto insurance laws.

If you've received a cancellation notice from your insurance company you may be entitled to appeal. The Pennsylvania insurance department requires that you notify them within 30 days of your notice and they will review your individual case.

Not paying your insurance bill on the due date is one more reason your Pennsylvania car insurance policy can be canceled. The state law allows insurance companies to hold you responsible for paying on time and has no grace period.

If you own a motor vehicle registered in the State of Pennsylvania then you are required to purchase and maintain auto insurance. There are many different types of coverage available to fit your needs. However, basic coverage is mandatory, meaning you have no option other than to purchase and maintain certain types of coverage to be in compliance with the law.

Should you allow your auto insurance to lapse or for any other reason are driving a motor vehicle without the Pennsylvania required insurance, you can two kinds of suspension. Your vehicle's registration can be suspended for three months, and your driver's license can be suspended for three months. You may also be subject to a minimum $300 fine for not carrying the Pennsylvania required insurance.

Once you've complied with the law after a suspension, there are other fines levied in order to re-establish your vehicle registration and renew your license.

However, if your insurance does lapse, if you surrender your vehicle's registration, plates, and sticker within 30 days of the lapse, you can avoid the penalties. The same is true when you vehicle is inoperable for any reason. You must surrender your plates and sticker or face the suspension and fines.

Below are the minimum Pennsylvania required insurance coverages:

• You must carry liability insurance. Liability insurance consists of bodily injury protection and property damage liability. If you own a registered vehicle you must purchase at least $15,000 of coverage for one person, $30,000 of coverage for injuries and medical bills, and $5,000 of coverage for property damage. Higher limits are available and are recommended if you have a lot of personal assets.

• You must also carry a medical benefits policy. The coverage requirement is $5,000. It doesn't matter which party is at-fault in an accident, this type of coverage will pay your medical bills and anyone else's medical bills who is on your policy. Just like with the above liability coverage, purchasing higher amounts of coverage is up to you.

• Drivers in Pennsylvania must choose full-tort coverage or limited-tort coverage. Limited tort coverage is a little cheaper than full-tort, but it comes with certain limitations for recovering damages should you make a claim. Investigate the difference between these two types of coverage thoroughly before you decide to purchase.

That is the extent of Pennsylvania required insurance. There are several other types and amounts of coverage that drivers may choose to best suit their needs. Two of the more commonly purchased options are collision/comprehensive and uninsured motorist coverage.

Collision/comprehensive will pay for the repair costs to your vehicle for situations out of your control, such as theft, vandalism, and damage from the weather. Uninsured motorist coverage will pay your injury expenses if the at-fault party in a traffic crash has no insurance or does not have enough insurance coverage to pay for all of your medical expenses.

If you have other questions, seek the advice of a licenses Pennsylvania auto insurance agent or consult with the Pennsylvania Insurance Department

So you haven't had a speeding ticket in years. No accidents either. By any standards your driving record is clean. Of course when you shop for a pa car insurance quote you expect to receive a pretty low rate. So why is your insurance quote still so high? Well, your high auto insurance rates may be the result of a poor credit score. Even those persons with a good driving record may still experience higher insurance rates if their credit score is low.

Many Pennsylvania insurers use personal credit scores as a determining factor in a calculation called an insurance score. And in recent years, a person's insurance score has become just as important as their driving record in determining what annual premium they will pay.

An insurance score is computed using data collected from bill-paying history and loan history as reported by major credit bureaus. If your bill-paying history is poor and you load ratio high, it could costs you hundreds of extra dollars each year on your car insurance rates. Studies show that a driver with a clean driving record, but a poor insurance score can pay significantly more than a driver with an at-fault accident, but a good insurance score. Part of the philosophy for rating insurance by using this score is that actuarial studies indicate that how a person handles his personal finances is a reliable predictor of future insurance claims. Still other studies claim that a person's significant financial difficulties may indicate a tendency for risky behavior.

While using insurance scores is prohibited in some states, it is legal for Pennsylvania auto insurers to use a personal credit history. Pennsylvania auto insurance companies will use these scores to determine which insurance products to sell, as well as to calculate rates. Each person's insurance score may also be used to determine your premium payment schedule – whether you will pay monthly, quarterly, or if you must pay the entire policy premium up front.

If you have a low insurance or credit score, there is one bit of good news. In the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania it is against the law to use these scores when your policy comes up for renewal. However, Pennsylvania insurers will use other factors at renewal to assess your premiums. Things like your age, gender, location, type of car, and your driving record will be considered.

If you know your credit score might negatively impact your auto insurance rates, then be sure to get as many rate comparisons as possible. Because each insurer calculates your score differently, you will find a wide range of premiums when you get several quotes from various companies. When you receive a quote, ask for details about your score. If details are provided, review them and look for any areas where you think you are being scored incorrectly. Also, if your score is low, ask how frequently each company reevaluates insurance scores.

Unfortunately, those most adversely affected by the insurance scoring method are usually the last to realize it. However, now you know, so shop carefully and ask questions

Each state has different laws that drivers as well as car insurance providers have to follow. In Pennsylvania, they require that every driver must be insured and have minimum insurance for body injury liability, property damage liability, and first party benefits. These will cover damage not only to you if you are injured, but also to your car and to your passengers. The bare minimum amount is $15,000, $5,000, and $5,000 respectively. You can have higher coverage, but that might mean higher Pennsylvania Auto Insurance rates.

It is a common mistake that people make to assume that because there is state regulation on how much insurance a driver needs to have that there is also a fixed price, but the truth is that each insurance company sets their own rates. A lot of different factors go into the rates that insurance companies have and they vary from place to place. Most companies will set their Pennsylvania Auto Insurance rates based on driver history, car model, and the neighborhood where a person lives. All of these things can affect the chances of how likely the car is to be damaged, and what the costs of fixing the car would be.

Every company will look at these factors but might consider them in different ways. When it comes to driver history, some insurance providers will lower premiums as time goes by with no accidents. Other companies might not do that, but they may consider accidents caused by nature different from collisions with other cars or people. In other words, these companies will only raise your Pennsylvania Auto Insurance rates if an accident was found to be your fault. They type of car you drive might be considered when determining your rates because nicer cars are more likely to be broken into, or foreign cars are more expensive to fix. If the neighborhood you live in has high crime, your insurance company might worry that your car is more likely to be damaged.

Since every company is a little different, it is really in your best interest to shop around for Pennsylvania Auto Insurance rates. There are many places online that will let you enter all of your information and then they will bring up all the rates for you. You might also want to check with local insurance companies because in some cases they will either have better coverage of better rates.

In Pennsylvania there are a few coverages that are required by law to register your motor vehicle. Those coverages are Bodily Injury Liability, Property Damage Liability and Medical Benefits. The following breakdown explains what each coverage means and what the implications are for those who are deemed to be under insured.

Bodily Injury Liability- Pa state minimum is 15,000 per person 30,000 each accident- This translates to your car insurance company paying out up to $15,000 to an injured party if your automobile caused them injuries that justified damages. Under the Tort laws of the state of Pennsylvania the injured party is due compensation for the fact that they suffered an injury caused by the operation of your automobile. Example: Your deemed to be fault in an accident that caused another person to suffer a broken arm. Not including medical expenses, your insurance company will be responsible to pay the injured party up to the amount decided by the courts. If the damages exceed the $15,000 limit per person, the injured party is permitted by law to recover from the registered owner of the automobile. Your fate then lies in the hands of the laws, your net worth, assets and interpretation of what a reasonable and prudent man would have done. Bottom line- Do not skimp on this coverage, for the few extra dollars that a $100,000 limit or $250,000 limit would cost you can possibly avoid an immensely stressful situation.

Property Damage Liability- In Pennsylvania the minimum limit required by state law is $5,000. If your automobile is determined to be the "at fault" vehicle in an automobile accident, you will be held responsible for the physical damages caused by your car. Whether it's a mailbox, a porch, or a $80,000 Mercedes your responsibility will be to reimburse the other parties damages. Your insurance company will pay up to the limit you have chosen. If the damages are the equivalent of a 2006 ford f150 or $20,000 and you are carrying the minimum limit of $5,000 your insurer will pay $5,000. The balance of $15,000 can be paid in several ways, you can write a check, the injured parties insurance company will pay them, or they will bring suit against you. If their insurance company pays the next step will be an action against the car owner for recovery(this is referred to as subrogation) if the judgment is not paid then you may forfeit your driving privileges in the states of Pa, NY and Ohio until payment is made. Again, you must weight the options of carrying the minimum limits, it hardly seems worth the possible expense.

Medical Expense- The state of Pennsylvania requires a limit of $5,000 on medical expenses. This coverage pays to you and any other "first party" in the vehicle or living in the household. This coverage pays the first $5,000 in medical expenses to you or your family as a result of a motor vehicle accident. This applies even if you are in another vehicle or a pedestrian. If the injury results from any contact with a motor vehicle the state of Pa indicates that coverage will apply. Keep these facts in mind when choosing your limits.

Saving 15% in 15 minutes. Yeah, we've all heard that one. Some of the best marketing in the history of pennsylvania auto insurance has hit the streets and you are the target. You pay on time, you have great credit and a good driving record. There may as well be a big bullseye painted on your chest because you are the #1 target of these marketing efforts.

Despite what you may have heard, there is no privacy in America today. With a checkbook and the demographics they wish to target, insurance companies and everyone else has your personal information available to them in a nanosecond. Good, bad or indifferent it's a fact we all have to live with. Yes, you can list your number on the "do not call" and that will help a little. The real fact is that to get your attention today a marketer has to reach you at least 5 times with mail, probably dozens of times via television and countless other ways. We are bombarded every day to the tune of thousands of marketing messages.

Well...back to Pennsylvania auto insurance. If you take a minute to research the Pennsylvania insurance departments website, you can look at a comparison of the top 20 or so companies in your county in a sample rate comparison. This is not a waste of time. Look at the top companies and then look at the ones you've never heard of. Wow...there's a big difference in the rates now isn't there? Many of the top companies have an advertising budget that would get this struggling economy on it's feet again. You can guess where that money is coming from. It's many times the companies that you haven't heard of that are offering some of the best bargains. These same companies are so busy with referrals that they don't need to advertise. Many of these carriers have a corporate philosophy of strictly marketing by word of mouth. No, they probably don't ring a bell when their name is mentioned in the average household, but what is more important? I think that finding a solid company that is well respected, profitable and user friendly is what many of us would be thrilled to have.

Get a few rate comparisons from online or a local agent and see what name floats to the top. Then check to see if they offer the percs that you'd love to add to your policy. Now you're on track to making something happen. If you've chosen a "regional" company you'll find that their rates tend to be much more stable when all the big names are raising rates. If you've chosen a company with a sound financial foundation and a history of good client satisfaction you've conquered another struggle. Now find an agent who is trustworthy, experienced and has a good track record and you've reached the home stretch.

As a resident of Pennsylvania, you know that it's a state law that you must have auto insurance. If you don't have auto insurance, and you're pulled over for any reason at all, you can expect to pay a pretty hefty fine. The best way to be an informed consumer when it comes to Pennsylvania auto insurance is to know the basics. You can consider the basics the building blocks of making good consumer choices. In this article, you will learn some general knowledge about auto insurance in PA, and also a little about how to make sure you get the best rates.

First, Pennsylvania auto insurance is not so simple that you either have it or you don't. If you know anything about insurance, you know that different things are covered for different amounts of money. Get familiar with the laws in Pennsylvania. After all, you live here and you should know what the state government expects of you. For instance, you must have a minimum of fifteen thousand dollars in bodily injury liability per person and thirty thousand per accident. You also must have five thousand dollars in property damage and five thousand dollars in first party benefits. This is the basic coverage in PA and is generally referred to as 15/30/5 coverage.

When you ask most of your friends in the state how they chose the coverage they did, you might be a little surprised by their answers. Many will say they bought their Pennsylvania insurance plan because it was the first policy they came across, or because someone told them it was good. While word-of-mouth is a great way to get ideas, you should most certainly know how to do the research. This begins with getting quotes. As a matter of fact, you should get auto insurance quotes every year. This might seem excessive, but rates change every year. Also, as your finances and driving record change, so will your monthly premium. The name of the game is staying current.

In the end, the best way to get the best deal on your PA insurance rates is to shop around. Purchasing auto insurance is no different than purchasing anything else. If you're concerned with saving money, you have to do a little research. Get online and see what kinds of policies different companies are offering. Get a bunch of free quotes. Find out what kind of premium you want to pay and what kind of coverage you feel safest with.

All owners of motor vehicles in Pennsylvania are required to buy and maintain Pa. auto insurance. Among the types of coverage you are required to take out under state law are liability coverage and First Party Benefits insurance. Liability insurance protects you if you are involved in an accident where you are found to be at fault and a claim is made against you. There are two types of liability coverage: bodily injury, which pays for medical expenses, and property damage, which covers the cost of repairing any property that was damaged during an accident. The minimum amount of liability coverage Pennsylvania law requires is $15,000 per person up to $30,000 per incident. You are also required to take out a minimum of $5,000 in property damage liability coverage. These amounts are also valid for Pennsylvania motorcycle insurance.

First Party (also known as Personal Injury Protection) insurance will pay your medical bills if you are involved in an accident whichever party is at fault. Taking out PIP insurance should not affect your Pennsylvania auto insurance rate in any way, since you are entitled to this coverage. There are also optional types of coverage that you can get a Pennsylvania car insurance quote for, such as comprehensive and collision insurance, depending on your particular needs.

Collision insurance covers any damage to your vehicle resulting from an accident. It is purchased with a deductable, meaning that you will pay for any expenses up to this amount, after which the insurance provider will start footing the bills up to the annual limit. Opt for a higher deductible if you want a lower Pa. auto insurance rate as long as you can afford to cover it.

Comprehensive coverage covers expenses related to the theft of your car or damage to it for reasons other than an accident. Just as in collision insurance, if you go for a higher deductible, you will get a lower Pa. auto insurance quote.

You can also get uninsured and under-insured motorist coverage. Uninsured motorist insurance protects you in case you are hurt or your car is damaged by a driver or vehicle that in not covered by insurance. Under-insured motorist insurance protects you if the other driver only has the minimum amount of coverage that is not enough to cover your medical expenses.

If you are looking for affordable Pennsylvania auto insurance quotes make sure to get quotes from at least three providers so you can comparison shop, or you can visit the sites of online insurance brokers that allow you to get multiple quotes from one place. You can also download a rate comparison chart from the Pennsylvania Insurance Department which lists the top 20 insurance providers in each county based on premium volume.
There are also ways you can get savings on rates by availing of discounts offered by the insurance companies. These include discounts for maintaining a safe driving record, installing safety and anti-theft devices in your car, taking approved defensive driving and safety classes and maintaining good grades if you are a teenage driver. You can also save money if you opt for limited tort coverage, meaning that you limit your rights to sue for damages related to pain and suffering although you are still allowed to sue for medical expenses that you have paid for out-of-pocket; full tort coverage will give you unimpeded rights to sue but will cost you between 12% and 20% more in monthly premiums. <!-- From http://www.buzzle.com/articles/basics-of-buying-pa-auto-insurance.html -->

Accidents in combination with violations are sure to be taken much more seriously than say "sliding on snow covered roads"
