5 out of 5 stars Real Risk Management for Real Life Projects   June 28, 2004
2 out of 3 found this review helpful

I found Ms. Mulcahy's book on risk management to be very informative and above all practical. This is not credenza material designed to take up space, look pretty and collect dust. It is a tool to be used as a reference, and source of ideas throughout the life of a project. I use it and have recommended it highly to my fellow project managers. Both beginners and seasoned professionals will find useful information they can apply to make their projects more successful, along with increasing their personal knowledge of the importance and application of risk management.

4 out of 5 stars Project Risk Mangement - Demystified   June 28, 2004

I must admit that this book titled "Risk Management: Tricks of the Trade for Project Managers" by Rita Mulcahy not only demystifies some of the gray areas in Risk management, but also conforms to the Guide to the PMBOK of PMI,USA.br Though I enjoyed reading your entire book in general, I appreciate the following points, in particular, which in my opinion will not only enhance the competency of the PMPs but also, serve as a good reference material in the years to come.br 1. A risk can not have probability rating 8 or higher, in which case it is considered a fact and should be included in the WBS as a work item.br 2.Over all Project risk score should be less than 50.br 3.Risk Probability -Impact matrix ( PI matrix) and risk score tables have been explained in an easy -to- understand style.br 4.Tips like "Many risks will not occur simply because they have become known ( to the respective team members) and let as many people appropriate know the risks identified on your project by putting the risk score on the Gantt chart".br 5.Response strategies for Opportunities (viz. Exploit,Enhance Accept, and Sharing) which have not been addressed in the guide to PMBOK.br 6. Tables in the Appendix giving list of Opportunities and list of Risks in Cause-Risk-Effect format is a unique feature of this book.p Thanks a lot, Rita , for bringing such an easy-to-read book aligned to the guide to PMBOK on such a gray area as Project Risk Management. This book will surly serve as a good source of reference for the practicing Project Managers and a good study material for PMP Certification exam candidates as well.(...)

4 out of 5 stars Good Summary of Risk Management some useful tricks   June 28, 2004

When I studied to take the PMP test three years ago, I couldn't find much written on risk management that was well organized and reasonably comprehensive. This book contains in one place what I was able to assemble on my own from myriad sources -- enough to get a near-perfect score on the risk management section of the certification exam.pIn addition, there are Tricks of the Trade that I have already applied to a current project. For instance, a trick from the book is putting risks directly into the project schedule; I turned this around and referenced tasks in the identified risks and was able to make some progress with management for the first time.pYou can assemble the pieces yourself or you can buy this book. I know which I would do if I could do it over. The tricks are a plus.

5 out of 5 stars This is a Keeper !   June 27, 2004

Risk Management is an excellent book that is well organized and easily adaptable to those who are teaching project management courses and desire to explain risk management concepts. It is a well organized book that has plenty of real world examples that make academic theories come to life. pAs a certified PMP I can attest to the rigor and comprehenive approach that the author has captured. I have used the concepts to boost my current projects. pI wish I could have gotten my hands on the text before taking the PMI Certification test; it would have eased and focused my study efforts. Buy this book --- it's a keeper !

I thought this book would be an excellent guide to Risk Managment based on the other books by Mulcahy. It is certainly not worth $70.00. You can find all this information in other PM books
