Product Description Did you know that you can tell time in your sleep? That women have more nightmares than men? Or that up to half of the calories you consume can be burned off simply by fidgeting? In Sex, Sleep, Eat, Drink, Dream, acclaimed science writer Jennifer Ackerman takes us on an astonishing and illuminating tour of the human body during a typical day, from waking in the morning to the reverie of sleep and dreams. Most of us are familiar with the concept of circadian rhythms, the idea that the human body maintains its own internal clock. Recent scientific advances reveal the importance of synchronizing our actions with our biological rhythms ? and show how defying them can cause us real harm. With Ackerman as our guide we learn the best time of day to take a nap, give a presentation, take medication, and even drink a cocktail, along with a host of other useful and curious facts. Entertaining and deeply practical, this book will make readers think of their bodies in an entirely new way.

An intriguing exploration of the body January 3, 2009 This is a really intriguing book that examines how the physiology of the body changes throughout an entire day. The reader learns a lot more about the different cycles that the body undergoes, which dependent on the time of day as well as how to make his or her habits work around and with the cycle of the body to produce healthier benefits.br /br /What I found particularly fascinating was the detailed look at different parts and functions of the body such as digestion and sleep. As I read this book, I came to appreciate the miracle of my body even more, as well as how I can consciously work with it in order maximize the life I'm living. I definitely think that this book offers a lot of exploration for people who wish to work with their bodies on a conscious level.
Uses "day in the life" format to introduce interesting ideas October 7, 2008 This is one many great recent 200 page or so science books which are helpful at introducing the subjects they discuss.br /br /In this case, the subjects treated are sex, food consumption, and sleep and dreams.br /br /With reference to the sexual issues, those who find their curiosity peaked by the issues in this book would be well advised to do follow up reading with such books as Dr. Helen Fisher's Why We Love as well as Matt Ridley's The Red Queen and Jared Diamond's Why is Sex Fun?br /br /As it relates to the sleep research could follow this book up with Andrea Rock's very excellent Mind At Night which follows up some of the points made in this book concerning the essential nature of sleep.br /br /As it relates to food consumption this book was a great primer and for me opened up new vistas of thought about what I had previously thought was just a mundane issue...eating and drinking.br /br /But in the end I guess that's the function of great science writing to make us see the wonder in even supposedly ordinary things.br /br /Or as Confucious once said: "Ordinary thinkers only see the wonder in great things but great thinkers see the wonder in even the ordinary."
Jennifer Ackerman writes like an angel. May 9, 2008 SEX SLEEP EAT DRINK DREAM is a wonderful amalgam of scientific fact, speculation, and personal observations about how we use our bodies and how they/we live in the world. The science is thorough and it is balanced by warm, delicate, elegant storytelling. Ms. Ackerman writes like an angel. I couldn't put it down, and have sent copies along to others. Highly recommended.

This book summarizes some fascinating observations about the human body. If you keep up with medical journals or popular science magazines (or perhaps even health magazines) you'll likely have heard most of the stories about how research from x linked y to z etc. The book is rather short, but even so chances are you'll find a few facts that you hadn't heard about before. The writing style is not very concise and too synonym-heavy for my taste, but quite readable nevertheless.br /
