This book is a bit different from many sales and referral strategy books in that it guides you through a thorough analysis of your business goals and objectives. I can't say that there are any earth-shattering concepts presented in the book but let's face it, good businesses are built on a solid foundation of the basics. It's only after the basics are mastered that advanced strategies are best applied.br /br /Most entrepreneurs and service professionals will find the early chapter on defining your ideal client quite refreshing. It's a great way to start or redefine your business. After all, if you are going to spend a good chunk of your life helping clients, it makes a lot of sense to work with people that you like!br /br /What I particularly like are the exercises that accompany each chapter. The book jacket refers to the book as a road map for starting and growing your service business, which is an appropriate analogy. Each chapter contains strategies and tactics on which you can immediately act and provides examples of how to implement the concepts.br /br /It's appropriate to note that entire books have been written on many of the concepts the author explains and recommends. The benefit of reading and applying the author's recommendations as he describes allow you to understand the strategy, apply the tactics and then decide which is best suited for you and your business. br /br /Once you determine which are best for your business and personality, you can then decide if you would like to learn more from other sources.br /br /If you are looking for a strategic road map on which to start or build your business, this book will be a great reference and starting point.

This book ranks as a MUST-READ for anyone who wants to maximize their potential. Michael provides a step-by-step process that simplifies the daunting task of marketing your business (no matter what field you're in) and even get in touch with yourself during the process. I purchased Book Yourself Solid because I was interested in expanding my therapy practice. But when I got to the part where the author asked what I would say if someone asked what I did I realized that this is much more about who I am and what inspires me than about selling generic counseling. Instead of saying that I'm a therapist who works with individuals and couples, I'm telling people that "I help couples rekindle the magic of their relationships." And "I help victims of violence feel safe again - and it happens very quickly." br /br /This book is tightly written, every chapter is short, concise and builds on the last. As I read I did the exercises and by the time I had finished reading I was already marketing myself in a new way and it didn't feel like marketing. In fact, I had a different sense of myself and my work because my work more reflects who I am. br /Whatever you are doing, or starting, or thinking about starting, if it's a one on one service business, get this book. br /br /I supervise beginning therapists and I'm recommending this to all my supervisees. (And no, they can't borrow my copy.)
