Its organized and highly practical approach will help administrators successfully complete the exam while also maximizing their ability to apply VMware on the job. The guide covers the body of knowledge required of a certified professional, provides the tools needed to keep that knowledge current, and helps develop the wherewithal to apply that knowledge to real solutions. The book covers the ESX 3.0.x through ESX 3.5.x releases that are the focus of the VCP test. Decent book, but inappropriate title December 4, 2008 As a newly certified VCP I have read this book, Mastering VMware Infrastructure 3 (Mastering) and all of the VMware documentation. I believe this book to be the least helpful of the three.br /br /The book follows a typical certification book format, but I just don't feel that's appropriate for the VCP. First, everyone who is considering taking the exam should have already taken the mandatory VMware class. Given that, there's simply no need for a book to recover the same information, and for page after page of fairly basic screenshots.br /br /I strongly believe that every exam candidate should have read all of the official documentation. It is better written than the books and if you read and understand it, you will be prepared for the exam. I would have preferred to read a shorter, summary style book prior to the exam. As of today, VMware Certified Professional (VCP Exam Cram) (Exam Cram) has not been released but could fill that niche shortly.br /br /As titled, the book is closer to a 2-star rating. Had they called it something like "learning virtual infrastruture" it might be closer to 4.
VMware Excellent Preparation November 20, 2008 VMware Certified Professional Test Prep by the brothers Ilgenfritz has proven to be an excellent preparation for the VMware Certified Professional exam. I found the whole of the book very organized. The inclusion of screen shots that flowed through a given process were consistent throughout and made analysis of functionality very clear for the most part. One of the few drawbacks was several formatting and editing errors through the question and answer sections of the practice test questions at the end of each chapter. Whoever managed the editing skipped through the test questions portion and this contrasted greatly with the clear and excellent editing in the main text of the chapters. I would think this would be the first repair in a new edition. Also, I would have preferred a greater cross-section in the index, but I think my wish is based mostly on how well the rest of the book raised expectations by its satisfying layout and thoroughly readable and comprehesive content. I haven't taken the exam yet - it's scheduled in two weeks - but I am fully comfortable with what I have learned from using this book. I look forward to more from these two and their approach to training in VMware. I found it excellent and highly recommend it to anyone looking for the right book to prepare for the VCP exam.br /
